    Front Roll Out Nest Box

by Alex Brown on Aug 08, 2024

Not a big fan. I bought four 10 bay nesting boxes. My hope was that the roll away would reduce egg cleaning/nesting box chores. These boxes have basically eliminated the need to clean the nesting box and thats great. Two stars. Thats pretty much where all the positives end. Based off the picture it appears that they may have made some improvements but the boxes I received have several design flaws. The hinges on the egg trays were tac "welded" and they popped off. After about the 10th one I finally decided to take the time and drill them out and rivet them into place. Seems be a good fix but was a major pain. Also the factory screws and riveted hinges for the perch bar are trash. the rivets have worn out after only a year and need to be drilled out and replaced with a machine screw. The screws that hold the perch bar to the boxes need lock nuts (which are not provided) do to the daily opening and closing will eventually loosen the nuts provided and they will fall off. My biggest complaint however is that the chickens egg pecking have never been worse. they easily figure out where the eggs roll to and have no issues sticking there head in to help themselves. Ive manufactured little curtains for the "doorway" from the nesting box to the egg tray to try to remedy the situation but it didnt do the trick. The egg trays are vented so when the eggs are pecked and broken the egg leaks through the egg tray and drips onto the floor of the coup or the tray beneath it educating the entire freak'n flock to eat their eggs. Its a disaster. Collecting eggs multiple times a day has been the only thing i've found can help reduce the pecked eggs but I don't have the time to do that. I have come to terms that if i want to improve the situation it will take me biting the bullet and purchasing a better designed nesting box.

    Convertible roll out nest boxes

by Lara Maxwell on Jun 22, 2024

I ordered from Stromberg, but it’s supplied by Mann Lake. I gave it 4/5 stars but as roll out nest boxes go it was a great purchase. I needed to switch from a conventional metal 8 hole to roll out 8 hole due to rampant egg eating hens. I needed the convertible because my hens absolutely refused the switch the first time I tried with a different brand of roll out boxes. With this one, I made every other one roll out. I’m very slowly converting them over. The hens love the deep conventional nest boxes of this setup. Just that change greatly reduced the egg eating because the included nest boxes are so deep that my hens can’t see the eggs well. Assembly was a bit long (2 hours?) but not too bad. I propped mine up on blocks instead of hanging on the wall because I have ducks. I also left the lower roost bar off so that the ducks can climb into the boxes. I needed more to help the birds climb in, so I put grip tape on the metal roll out box so birds don’t slip on the metal. I put a bar across the front of each row of nest boxes as there is not the usual rolled edge that hens use to help themselves into the box. Lastly, I changed the upper roost bar by adding a 4 x 1 board as my hens didn’t like the narrow 2” bar that’s included. You might want to consider whether your set up needs these changes before installing and then trying to make changes!
